The new phase of the Act Against AIDS project by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is addressed to the gay and bisexual community in America. Its name is ‘Start Talking. Stop HIV' and it focuses on the importance of talking about safe sex with your sexual partner(s) before engaging an intercourse.
This sounds so easy but we all know that it actually isn't, whether you're gay or straight. However it's a matter of vital importance: "Only after having open and honest conversations can partners make informed choices about which strategies will work for them", said Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention. "Start Talking. Stop HIV. urges gay and bisexual men to break the silence and take control of their health."
To help people with this difficult task, the campaigners put online a series of YouTube videos as well as some suggestion to easier the start of a conversation on HIV and protection.
The core message of the campaign questions the way with which we look at the people we have chosen as sexual partners: what do they mean for us? How do we deal with them?
We shouldn't be afraid of being open about ourselves, especially because this is the way to understand if the person in front of us - or in our bed - is lying to us or being honest. Those people that may be accused of being superficial or lame are usually just confused and lost: for this reason, if we face them with a serious question, it's going to be easier for both to understand what is happening and to be aware of what's under the surface. Serious conversations deepen relationships, it doesn't matter if we are with our Mr. Right or just Mr. RightNow.
