Meet Generation Porn

Internet porn is available at any time, at any place. Never before have teenagers had such easy access to porn. But is internet porn damaging to their sexual life and their view on relationships? There are a couple of different opinions on the matter.

In Belgium they did research on how sexualizing media influences the sex lives of Flemish youth. The researcher, Laura Vandenbesch, is a student in Mass Communication Research at the KU Leuven in Belguim. A total of 1504 students took part in the survey. The results showed that quite a lot teenagers watch or have watched porn in the past 6 months. According to the age, the percentage got higher. Some may think that the numbers are shocking, but they haven’t really changed that much. Young adults have always been searching for porn, but now it’s much easier for them to find it. This leads to the opinion that this generation is a lot more dissolute.

British premier David Cameron agrees. His solution to for this matter is to install a porn filter on every computer/laptop. Cameron said: ‘We need to take measures, because internet porn is a threat to our children’s innocence’. But not everyone agrees. Belgian criminologist and sexologist Alexander Witpas strongly believes that as a parent it's important to communicate with your children. This porn filter is not the solution, it is in fact violation of privacy. Educating young people about sex and sex related subjects is the solution. This is something that Cameron hasn’t applied in his country.

Does today’s youth consider porn as an example to follow? It’s possible.  They visit these sites along with a lot of other websites as a source of information.  But keep in mind that young adults who watch porn online know that it isn’t the reality. The porn is real, but also very unreal. Yes penises enter vagina’s, but you won’t get sex if you’re a pizza delivery boy. These days we all go to the internet if we need information about something. Either way, we don’t want them to consider porn as the example for their own sex lives. The man is usually dominant and the woman just has to go along with it. That’s not the message we want to give them. This is why it’s very important to talk to you kids about porn, sex and relationships.

Laura Vandenbosch also agrees on not implementing the porn filter, but she does strongly believe that it has a negative influence on youth. For example, she strongly believes that it emphasizes stereotypical appearances. Basically what she means is that boys will think that girls need to look a certain way. She also believes that in the early stage of puberty, porn is a trigger for youth to start having sex.

This is a very difficult subject to research, because it's often done by very conservative parties or by organizations that already have an opinion about porn. Porn just exists and today it’s more accessible than ever. If you take it away and forbid your children to watch it, they will want it even more. It’s always like that. That’s why education is important! Let your kids know that those people are actors and that it’s not like that in real life. Porn can be hard and mot of the time it doesn’t show the safe way to have sex (condoms don't play the leading role, to say the least).
