South Park, The Simpsons... Are You Positive?

Do you guys often watch South Park, The Simpsons or something similar? I do. I used to watch it a lot when I was around 17 and my mom kept having this naggy attitude about it. ‘Why do you watch such stupid cartoons? The drawing is horrible and they don’t tell you anything interesting.’ Sound familiar? And I would be all like ‘ Mooooom, you just don’t get it’.  It wasn’t my most glorious feedback ever… But I still think I’m right.

And after these endless discussions at home, they would return in high school. Are these good or bad TV shows? Or for the professionals: are they lowbrow or highbrow? I believe they are both. Admitted, they don’t have the most subtle way to handle topics but they do deal with subjects: easy or hard. Check out this video from South Park for example. It’s about being HIV positive. Am I a bad person because I laughed at it? I don’t think so. It's funny. At the same time however, they tackle the subject about ‘what part of being infected by a deadly disease is funny?’. Or take a look at this video from Family Guy. True, it’s not the best way to tell someone they have AIDS, not HIV but for everyone out there who didn’t know there was a difference, it might be a start for their research.

So the next time your mom tells you there’s no use in watching these shows, teach her a lesson by giving some good examples about what you learned by watching them.

Last but not least, being negative in life isn’t a bad thing. That is, if we are talking about being HIV negative, of course!
