Hydeia Broadbent: I Can Get Up, I Can Do Something

This girl is  a story to write about – and not good for my emotional state. Hydeia joined Oprah Winfrey on her show at the age of 11 (now she’s almost thirty) and talked about the fact that she is HIV positive. It always scares me when someone so young sounds so adult. Kids are supposed to be innocent, in a good way: play outside, believe blindly what their mom tells them and looking forward to the pancakes in the afternoon. This girl however had bigger worries and instead of just undergoing what is happening to her, she devoted her life to fighting HIV. She became a public speaker and also that didn’t go as planned. She struggled with depression, low self-esteem and the typical asshole boyfriend. Moral of this story though: She never gave up. They told her she would not live past the age of five and she is turning thirty soon.  I believe she said it best as an 11-year old:

“If you stay in your bed and feel sorry for yourself... and say, 'I'm going to die,' [then] why get up and try to make a difference? But if you say, 'Today's another day. I can get up, I can do something,' [you can] make something positive."
