Uganda Cares – a program of the US NGO AIDS Healthcare Foundation, launched a new HIV campaign in Uganda. Since the start of the campaign there has been a lot of controversy about it. Uganda has always used HIV campaigns based on faithfulness and getting tested. But this new campaign focuses on “cheaters”. The message is: “Cheating? Use a condom” and “Cheated on? Get tested”. These lines go with the image of a broken heart. To some organizations and people this message is too controversial, they say it’s encouraging immorality. But Uganda Cares says the number of HIV infections among couples is very high. That’s why they want to clarify that if you must cheat, you should use a condom so you don’t endanger your partner. 

I think that when it comes to reducing the number of HIV patients nothing is controversial enough. This new and ‘shocking’ approach might even be a good thing: this way the campaign gets more attention and therefor the message gets spread more easily.
