Today, Queen Elisabeth II will be signing a historic anti-discrimination document, applying to every commonwealth nation. "We are implacably opposed to all forms of discrimination, whether rooted in gender, race, colour, creed, political belief or other grounds," the charter reads. Although it doesn’t specifically mention sexual orientation, international gay advocacy groups pointed this out as a victory, bearing in mind that this is the first time in her 61- year rule that the queen is supporting gay rights. Also, they say it was purposeful decision, that represents a part of a wider campaign run by the British government to adress civil rights abuses in former British colonies, because -just to remind you- homosexual acts are still illegal in 41 of commonwealth’s 54 nations. A diplomatic source said that the impact of this statement on gay and women’s right, should not be underestimated, since nothing this progressive has been aproved by the United Nations ever and it is most unusual for the queen to request to sign documents in public, never mind call the cameras in. Some analysts say that queen took this initiative out of personal reasons too, to even the path to the royal throne for the boys and girls now that her granddaughter-in-law Kate is pregnant for the first time. Whatever the reason, we love this decision!
