"Dallas Buyers Club" was presented September 7 at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and starring Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto, is based on the true story of Ron Woodroof (McConaughey), who died of AIDS in 1992. Woodroof, a "boozing, foul-mouthed, womanizing heterosexual" and homophobic guy, contracted HIV in 1986 and survived the syndrome for 6 years with the help of unapproved treatments smuggled from Mexico.

At that time, the medical care system was still not ready to the constant growing number of newly HIV+ people and the waiting line to access the treatment was way too long.

The movie, described on TIFF's website as "a classic story of American enterprise", shows how Woodroof and the troubled drag queen Rayon (Leto) could help many people by selling this alternative treatment.

What striked me the most is the fact also Leto experienced indirectly what is being affected by HIV: "(When I moved to Los Angeles in 1991) I rented a room in a three-bedroom apartment and one of the rooms was rented by a man who was dying. I didn't remember that until I was in the middle of the film and it hit me. I couldn't believe I had this experience with this man who was incredibly gentle. It was actually in the first week of filming that I recalled this and it really affected me in a deep way. He was a wonderful person".

I am really curious to see this movie on the big screen, many interesting themes are involved and I can't also wait to see this new transformation of Jared Leto. Amazing.

We wish good luck to Vallée and all the film's crew- this movie will certainly have an impact on the audience and hopefully on the jury too.
