Wearing a T-shirt bearing the pictures of two adopted daughters who died of AIDS, Lorrie Cram joined the eighth annual Florida AIDS Walk on the beach in Sunday, thinking of her children every step of the way. More than 2200 people walked along Fort Lauderdale beach in an event that raises money and awareness about this immune system disease, important due to the fact that Florida ranks third among states in the US in the number of new cases reported annually. All money raised goes to local organizations that deal with discrimination- related issues, the Children's Diagnostic and Treatment Center and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation in the town. "HIV is everywhere! Rates are skyrocketing especially among women, men of color and young people", said the walk director Mark Martin, the director of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which provides medications and promotes the fight against the illnes. Like Lorie Cram, most people who showed up to walk had been personally affected by the disease: if not diagnosed themselves, they knew others who had been infected by HIV or who had died from AIDS. After the walk Grammy winner Chaka Khan and many other musicians performed at a stage on the beach. “What a day”, said one of the musicians! We ‘ll add: What an initiative! With more actions like this we will beat AIDS!
