As Sexy As Carmen, As Fancy As A Porsche

Carmen Carrera is a genius and today I'd like to explain the reason why. And if you don't know who I'm talking about, I suggest you to have a look at the poster by David La Chapelle promoting this year edition of the Life Ball in Vienna As you can see, Carmen has never been shy with showing her - amazing - body and there's no doubt that the reason of her fame is closely connected to the way she decided to use her physique - to shock the audience first and then, once the success came, to make statements supporting the transgender community.

In fact, supermodel Carmen (born Christopher Roman) is becoming one of the main public figures speaking up for the social rights of transgender people: "I've seen tons of my friends tell me that they can't go to school and they can't have a career because they're trans." Said Carrera to TheAdvocate.com. "They have to sit there and they have to prostitute themselves, because that's all they can do with their life".

Some months ago Carrera started a dispute about the way the words ‘tranny' and ‘shemale' have been used in the American reality show RuPaul's Drag Race, the same show she participated some years ago and to which Carmen owns a big deal of her success. For this reason Carmen already received many negative comments, most recently by the latest winner of the drags competition Roy Haylock aka Bianca Del Rio: "Let's face it, we wouldn't know who the fuck Carmen Carrera was if she didn't fucking get on Drag Race. Maybe she should take what's left of her dick and stick it in her mouth and shut the fuck up." Del Rio later on tweeted her apologies to Carmen for the lame joke: "I have now fired my comedy writer (me)".

In Carrera's opinion, people going through the process of gender transition have the right to be considered as belonging to the gender they decide to be: if you want to be a woman, you may be addressed as a woman, not as a trans or tranny or shemale. "I'm trying to show people, including young trans people, that you don't have to identify with [words like ‘tranny' or ‘shemale']. And you can identify with female. You can identify with saying ‘woman', with saying ‘sister.' You can identify with those words. You don't have to be pigeonholed into using these words and defining yourself by saying 'tranny.'" Carmen is rightly pointing out the responsibility of those speaking to a wide public: if you use certain words there is the risk to worsen the condition of who are usually addressed with these words: you just need to google the word ‘tranny' to see that it's more about porn than about people trying to live their life as a woman.

Carmen will soon be featured in TransAmerica, the new series from Tyra Banks and Gay Rosenthal, following the lives of five transgender women in Chicago, focusing on their dating, family and professional ambitions. After the immense success of RuPaul's reality show and Conchita Wurst's victory at the Eurovision contest the public has a deeper understanding of personalities identifying themselves inbetween the two sexes. The work of Carmen is all about celebrating diversity, that is the only way we have to build a better society, where respect and freedom of expression are the only rules to follow.
Go Carmen go, DAA loves you!
