Once again women are taking matters into their own hands: Women Out Loud, a new report by UNAIDS, represents the voices of females living with HIV. They share their insights on how HIV is affecting them and they give information about what they are doing to reduce the number of women with HIV. Their main points of action are: improving women’s social and economic status and enhancing their decision making power. To give you a clear example of what the women of UNAIDS do, Jane Bruning, National Coordinator of Positive Women Inc. of New Zeeland, helped to set up a training package called ‘Lifting the burden of secrecy’ that helps women to learn about HIV and what they should do to protect themselves and others. When you know that every minute one young woman is newly infected with HIV worldwide, you realize that women really need a hero (or in this case, a heroine) to save them. Hurray for women!
