I wrote a story a while back talking about the porn filters that would be added to the interwebs in the UK. If you have no clue what I’m talking about, it’s very simple: If you want to access online sexual fun, you have to say so.  Not literally speaking of course, but every browser comes with a warning and a question whether or not you want to be able to access adult content. If not, you’ll be put on ‘parental mode’. They even have three versions: strict, moderate or light. Basically this means that if you do like the occasional juicy movies, Cameron knows.  Why? Well, to protect the innocent children, of course!

The funny side of this story however is that, according to the latest news, in their enthousiasm they blocked a bit too much. Since the filters work automatically and clear the internet of sites that contain a lot of words like ‘sex’ or ‘porn’, they accidently also blocked a numerous amount of sexual education websites -and porn addiction help sites!  In my previous story I wrote that it would be better to keep the porn sites but to educate youth, not to quit it all together! It’s a bit ironic that by protecting the youngsters they’re now taking away the opportunity for those same people to find the right information.

Another funny side note (that I also predicted): after releasing the filters it only took 24 hours before extensions for most providers were released that promised to bypass the filters and that opened up the porn Walhalla to all who want to visit it again.

Lesson to be learned: education is key. Oh -and people aren’t that stupid.
