Thumbs up for the Grand Rapids City High School students from West Michigan. These kids proudly stood up for the LGBT community.

The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education West Michigan Chapter, The Fountain Club and Fountain Street Church high school youth group were happy to sponsor the 4th annual West Michigan Alternative Prom on Saturday, May 3. Every single high school student was welcome to The ‘Great Gatsby’ dance.

For those of you who haven’t heard of this initiative yet, it’s actually pretty cool. The alternative prom is created to give that typical and classic high school experience for gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual youth and allies. It’s organized in a safe environment where they can feel happy and accepted instead of uncomfortable or unwanted. This is the reason why Isabel’s (a junior at the high school) sister organized the first alternative pro m in 2011. Why shouldn’t students with an alternative lifestyle be able to experience everything that other students do as well?

I think it’s a great initiative. It gives these students a sense of acceptance and they can connect with other LGBT youth. They shouldn’t feel excluded and by taking part in the alternative prom, they don’t. So, yay to Alternative Prom and yay to Isabel’s sister.
