A friend, Jean-Claude Wouters, sent us this today, a photo of Debbie Harry of BLONDIE fame wearing a "Debbie says use condoms" t-shirt, which made us smile. These T-shirts were the idea of Katherine Hamnett, an English fashion designer and one of the earliest supporters of Designers Against AIDS, who became an icon in the eighties with her oversized T-shirts that had political slogans in block letters. She once met with then prime minister Margaret Thatcher wearing her own T-shirt with the slogan "58% DONT WANT PERSHING", a reference to polls showing public opposition in the United Kingdom against the basing of Nuclear Pershing missiles in the country. We love this kind of activism, using your wardrobe to express your opinion and what you really believe in, it makes people you cross in the street or elsewhere think, it is a very simple and clever way of protesting.

Katharine did some slogan T-shirts for us in two of the Fashion Against AIDS collections and another one for the first DAA collection, for those who got their hands on them, congratulations... For others -like me- who didn't, let's hope something is in the pipeline for us soon.
