The US Government has ruled that The Milton Hershey School has violated the disability act by refusing to allow admission to an HIV-positive boy. Chocolate maker Milton Hershey founded the school in 1909; the school provides a free education to low-income and socially disadvantaged students. About 1,850 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade are currently enrolled.
The school had previously argued that his disease could have posed a threat to the health and safety of other students. The school and subsequently the main funder of the school, Hersheys, got bombarded with bad publicity and protests in San Fransisco, New York and Hershey (Pennsylvania) where the company headquarters and school are located.

The ruling against the school is great news, setting precedence that such discrimination is not acceptable, it is these kind of decisions that fuel and encourage stigma towards HIV+ people.

Hate the disease, not the victims, is what we have to say.
