Two evenings in a row we were eating the same food as typical Ukrainians. Everybody found it heavy, but tasty!
The first evening Veniamin prepared "Draniki" - which is a Belorussian meal, made of chopped potatoes. On the second evening he served the sweet "Oladyi" dish.
For readers who want to repeat our gastronomic experience in their own kitchen, here's how to do it:
Draniki
Ingredients:
- 800 gram potatoes ( 6-7 large potatoes)
- 1 onion
- White flour - 0.5 cup
- 3 chicken eggs
- Butter - 100 gram
- Butter or sour cream -100 gram
- Soda - 0,5 teaspoon
- Salt to taste - 3/4 teaspoon
- oil for frying
Preparation:
Chop the potatoes and onions in a blender, add the flour, put in the eggs, salt, baking soda, mix well, make patties by hand and fry those from all sides in hot oil.
Serve with butter or sour cream and a salad on the side.
Oladyi (Russian Pancakes)
Ingredients:
- 1/2 kg of flour (2.5 cups)
- 2 cups milk (warm)
- 25 g yeast (if using dry yeast: 1 tablespoon)
- 2 eggs
- 1-2 spoons of sugar
- 3-4 spoons of butter
- 1/2 teaspoons of salt
- oil for frying
Preparation:
Dissolve the yeast in a small amount of warm water, pour the milk, add flour and mix the dough. Place in a warm place for fermentation for 30 minutes.
Then add the eggs, salt, sugar and butter and let the dough rise a second time (dough should be thicker than for pancakes, but still easy to take from the bowl with a spoon).
Fry the pancakes in a frying pan, heated with oil (after toasting each serving of pancakes, pour a new layer of oil in the pan).
These pancakes can be served with butter, sour cream, cheese with sour cream, jam, honey, fruit and/ or sugar.
