The Perks Of Being Bisexual

As you all know, we are proud supporters of the LGBT community and regularly post articles of news around the world and interesting topics related to lesbians, gays, bisexual or transgender.

Having written mainly about the gay and lesbian community, it surprised me today to realise I was yet to come up with something about bisexuals as this is a subject I’ve covered with a lot of friends lately.

First and foremost, there is a difference between being bisexual and bi-curious. To me, bisexual is someone who admits and accepts the fact that they like both women and men and bi-curious is somebody who still wonders where to stand at.

It’s not unusual to experience bi-curiosity at some point, in fact most people do it when they’re in their puberty or early 20s. However, there are few reasons why some of those people think there is something wrong about them, especially when they come from a conservative background.

Well, the truth is that it’s totally okay to be curious, curiosity is an animal instinct! We’re living in a society where everything has to bear a tag and so does who you are in your sexual preferences but the reality is that sexuality doesn’t follow any patterns.

Remember, you don’t choose your sexual orientation, you feel it. You like that person for what it is and gender shouldn’t be an issue. Whatever mummy, daddy, teachers or the holy priest told you is dancing over your head at this point but at the end of the day, they are not the ones to live your life. You could end up following a path you never wanted because of all their ‘worrying’ and lose your happiness along the way.

Your sexual desire for someone is not only about their looks or personality but also the way he/she makes you feel. And as we all know, emotions are something hard to fight or change.

It is essential to be honest with yourself and if you decide to explore your sexuality, take care not to lead people on or use them as experiments because same sex relationships are just as complex and serious as straight ones.

Bisexual people are sometimes seen as promiscuous but again, each person is different – while some do it for the thrill, others are serious about it, sometimes marry a same sex partner and are as happy as a clam!

Put it this way: sexuality is like music. There is no reason why we like certain types and not others. Now, say you’ve always listened to rock and one day you hear a pop song playing in the background and you love it immediately yet you don’t know why. You might like that one only or you want to check other songs of the same type. Liking something else doesn’t mean you have to give up Rolling Stones, does it? You owe them nothing anyway.

Some people also think bisexuals like men and women equally but this is not quite right either. Each person is diverse in their very own way and sometimes we could be dating girls for months and suddenly fall in love with a guy. When I was around 12 years old, the straight lady who used to work at my local kiosk suddenly announced she realised she’s always been in love with her friend Rachel although she never considered herself lesbian nor bisexual, she just knew she loved this girl and didn’t care about her gender. Rachel felt the same way about it and they’ve been together for ages.

Don’t settle for the black or white, colours make the world a beautiful place and the recipe for a happy life is simple: Remove all tags and taboos, don’t be sceptical, don’t deny your feelings, respect others and you’ll see everything as clear as the blue sky of freedom.
