To Russia Without Love

Remember Prison Break star Wenworth Miller? Well, he recently broke a few fangirl hearts when coming out as gay. I have to admit he won over mine though. You see, he received an invitation to be a special guest in Russia’s Film Festival but he kindly declined with the following words:

“Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes.

However, as a gay man, I must decline.

I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.

Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice."

It might be a small step, but at least he is, in his way, protesting against the antigay laws that Russia introduced a while back. For me and for many others loving someone – I don’t care of what gender – is a human right, a right worth fighting for. And what's happening in Russia at this point is unacceptable so anyone who finds a way to make a statement against that, deserves our respect.
