Women Unite!

Looking for the next hit online? Then look back...way back...try 1964 and you’ll find Leslie Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me”, which finally got its own music video --one kick-ass political PSA -- and bona fide an official women's anthem! The mastermind behind all the buzz? Law graduate, filmmaker and blogger Sarah Sophie Flicker. The concept was simple: to get attention (or “hits”) FAST and urge women (which represent more than 60% of the voters in the country) to vote against Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and the policies he recently announced during the latest debate against president Obama, such as cutting funds for family planning, birth control and prohibiting same-sex marriage. The video shows more “indie” celebrities like Lena Dunham, Alexa Chung, Sia and Zoe Kravitz lip-synching to the song in front of their webcams saying: "You don't own me, don't try to change me in any way. You don't own me, don't tie me down 'cause I'd never stay." Besides the video being a pretty clever and cool way to speak out, the song couldn't have been a better choice…though it’s incredible—and sad— that after all this time we are still fighting for the same rights! Even though this is happening in the U.S., things are quite similar or even worse in other parts of the world…so girls, if you want things to change: SPEAK UP!
