Old enough to know

The taboo about sex isn’t what it used to be, it might not surprise you, but just how much do kids these days know about sex already? In Africa investigators from the Cambridge University tested it out with 12-year olds using the technique ‘photo voice’. What is that , you ask? Well, let me reassure you, there were no pictures involved of talking penises or anything else that comes to your mind. The kids were given a camera and asked to photograph all the places, people or thing that taught them about sex. The result was rather an artwork to be honest, and you can check them out on the youtube video that can be found above. Next to art, it’s also quite interesting. It gave the kids an opportunity to talk about the things they know, but also to show the things they don’t know and ask those difficult questions about the birds and the bees. I hear you thinking: ‘And why is this important with 12-year olds?’ Well, since it’s not always possible to give a vaccine to prevent HIV/AIDS, we cannot forget the importance of the ‘social vaccine!’ Teaching these kids about sex and HIV can save them from the illness. It costs a lot less money, but does take a bit more effort, but as we all know: they’re worth it. (No, not talking about L’oréal here!)
