Changing Female Body Image Through Art

There is no such thing as the perfect vagina, ladies. And I’m saying ladies, because it is true what artist Jamie McCartney says: “For many women their genital appearance is a source of anxiety and I was in a unique position to do something about that.”

For those of you who don’t know, Jamie is the genius who created ‘The Great Wall Of Vagina’. I’m talking about a 9 meter long polyptych that consists of 400 plaster casts of vulvas. All of them are very unique and arranged into 10 large panels. Some expressive art work, I tell ya. There is such a unique variety of vajayjays, it goes from the age of 18 to 76, mothers and daughters, identical twins, transgendered men and women and also women pre and post natal. Even pre and post labiaplasty. I would say if you’re feeling insecure about the way your vagina looks, go take a look at this unique art work.

The Great Wall Of Vagina is not meant as pornography, I think you’d have to be kind of weird and maybe twisted to think so. Sorry, but that’s just my opinion. I know it’s not your usual kind of art work but hey, first time for everything, right? Although I can imagine that this wall would be like paradise for some men or even women.

Anyways I think it’s kind of cool… I think. Not sure, haven’t seen it in real life yet. The only thing I’m wondering is: isn’t it a little bit awkward for the artist and the model? I don’t know for you, but I don’t feel comfortable showing my private parts to some stranger….ohw yeah and then showing it to millions of others. I’d probably rethink it a million times (just like everything else in my life) and I don’t know maybe get a lawyer involved. No no, I’m kidding, I would let him near my vajayjay in the first place. Thumbs up for those who did, though.

There is an educational part in all of this art work as well. What McCartney wants is to show women that  ‘perfect’ vaginas don’t exist. And the fact that some people want to create the perfect one is worrying actually. What will our future generations do? Jamie has put some unusual casts in each panel and highlighted them to stand out a bit. By doing this, he hopes to educate, enlighten and also address some of the stigmas, taboos and misconceptions that are still in people’s heads. You can check some of these panels out on the website.

Jamie is still looking for models, for both casts and other artwork. So, I’d say if you’re feeling it, go for it.
