Not A Nice Nurse

Have you guys heard of the nurse in Uganda that has been jailed for three years because she inserted a needle into a two year old baby after pricking  herself.
The 64 year old nurse, Rosemary Namubiru, was arrested in January after the child’s mother raised an alarm on the situation. Apparently she wanted to put a canulla (needle in a tube) on the baby, but the baby was moving a lot, so she pricked herself. Then the baby calmed down and she went on and used the same needle.  Ok, maybe she didn’t do it on purpose, but come on…. Aren’t you supposed to a little bit more careful when dealing with a baby, needles and you yourself being HIV positive? The child was tested and is not infected, but officials have said that it could still be too early to tell.

During the trial there were two sides. There were the Ugandans who were very shocked by her case and thought of it as an example of malice or negligence. On the other hand some international activist groups said that Rosemary was a victim of stigma and discrimination because of her HIV status and that her trial was unwarranted.

I don’t know, I’m just shocked. When your jobs is nursing or being a doctor, shouldn’t you be more careful. You are dealing with people’s lives, you know. It makes me frustrated.

And what about the nurse who covered a newborn baby’s mouth with tape because he was crying too much? I know you can’t compare it with Rosemary’s situation, but we’re talking about nurses now, so…

I just hope that in the end the baby turns out to be healthy.
